Exhibition - Caostsuo
In 2014, Pedro Matsuo overdosed on his way to the beach. He was 17 years old and survived. The near-death experience was a butterfly effect in the artist's life. In this spiritual awakening, he found art as his escape valve. He began painting early, doing graffiti in the streets and at friends' houses, but it was from his rebirth onward that his artistic vein intensified, giving new meaning to his hyperactive existence.
As Nietzsche would say, human beings find their salvation in art, in the overcoming of themselves. Beyond good and evil, the individual is someone with free horizons, a blank page, characterized by the simple, boundless power of choice. Pedro Matsuo chose to live. And in this new chance, he embraced the shadow by giving light to a restless body of work that expands into multiple strands, in the form of painting, projection, photography, sculpture, installation, tattoo, design, furniture, technology and fashion. His inner tangle mirrors his power in creative explosion.
In his first solo exhibition, the artist invites the viewer to embark on his account and experience, through his visions and dreams, his signs and symbols. From the hallucination of drugs to the delirium of everyday life, we pass through the process of hospitalization and self-knowledge, in which the notebooks were great allies during detoxification. Later, pictorial works explore transformation on the earthly plane, flashbacks from the past and the expression of the subconscious. Icons repeat themselves, such as the eyes, portals of the soul; geometric and organic lines, with the predominance of black and white; the mysterious typography, with its own code to be deciphered; and the figure of the chameleon, a reflection of the multi-artist, flexible, adaptable to change.
The inventory presented here maps techniques, dimensions and diverse media laden with sensoriality. Creations developed throughout this exploratory journey, and also site-specific installations, made exclusively from within the gallery. The use of apparently simple materials brings a raw aspect to the environment, something unfinished, undefinable, in self-observation, between becoming and what is yet to come, in this field of experimentation and improvisation, spilling beyond the visible matter. The truth is that we are passing through a transitional chapter, immersed in the artist's incessant flow, amid his chaos.
Chaos is less about disorder and more about movement. It is the primordial void, in the cosmos, containing all the possibilities of eternity. It is a filling of air and space, unlimited, infinite. Within his expanding universe, Pedro Matsuo encourages us to cultivate the chaos within ourselves, giving voice to our restlessness. For him, any instant is a source of inspiration. Even more so in the moment we are passing through, the exhibition is an ode to the now, to everything we can accomplish, love and feel, in the appreciation of our utmost potential and the intensity of the present. The chaos of each day is, simply, life.
